iPhone Duo and Apple Pencil: which one works, and what it can do

Only one Apple Pencil works with the iPhone Duo: the USB-C model, supported since iOS 27.2. Pairing, palm rejection, the hinge trick, its limits, and the display-care cost to know first.

Does the iPhone Duo work with Apple Pencil? Yes, but with exactly one model: Apple Pencil (USB-C), which costs $79 from Apple. Apple lists it for both of the Duo's displays. The Apple Pencil Pro that many iPad owners already have does not work, and neither do the first- or second-generation Pencils, according to MacRumors. There is also a software step: iPhone Duo Apple Pencil support comes with iOS 27.2, which Apple released on October 26, 2026, so owners need to update from the iOS 27.1 software the Duo ships with. This is a compatibility and buying guide, not a review. iPhone Duo Hub has not tested a Pencil on the Duo; the hands-on findings below come from MacRumors and its videographer Dan Barbera.

Key takeaways

  • Only Apple Pencil (USB-C) works with the iPhone Duo, at $79 from Apple. Apple lists support on both the inner and outer displays.
  • Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil 2 and Apple Pencil 1 do not work with the Duo, according to MacRumors.
  • Support is available with iOS 27.2, released October 26, 2026. The Duo ships with iOS 27.1, so update first.
  • The Pencil pairs over a USB-C cable. It can attach magnetically to the Duo's hinge for storage, but does not charge there, according to MacRumors.
  • Apple says hover is not supported with the Duo, and the USB-C model has no pressure sensitivity, double-tap or squeeze.

Which Apple Pencil works with the iPhone Duo?

Apple Pencil model Works with iPhone Duo? Why
Apple Pencil (USB-C) Works Apple lists iPhone Duo in its compatibility list and on the Duo's specs page
Apple Pencil Pro Does not work Not listed by Apple; MacRumors reports it does not work
Apple Pencil 2 Does not work Not listed by Apple; MacRumors reports it does not work
Apple Pencil 1 Does not work Not listed by Apple; MacRumors reports it does not work

Apple's iPhone Duo specs page lists "Supports Apple Pencil (USB-C)" under the features shared by both displays, so it works on the 7.6-inch inner display and the 5.4-inch outer display. A footnote adds one limit: hover is not supported when using Apple Pencil (USB-C) with iPhone Duo. On Apple's Apple Pencil (USB-C) product page, iPhone Duo is the only iPhone in the compatibility list. Our full specs page covers both displays in detail.

Does Apple Pencil Pro work with the iPhone Duo? What iPad owners should know

No. MacRumors reports that Apple Pencil 1, Apple Pencil 2 and Apple Pencil Pro will not work with the iPhone Duo, and Apple lists only the USB-C model. If you use an Apple Pencil Pro with an iPad, you would need a second Pencil for the Duo.

When does Apple Pencil support come to the iPhone Duo?

Updated October 27, 2026: iOS 27.2 is now available, and this guide has been updated to match.

Pencil support is added in iOS 27.2. MacRumors reported on October 21, 2026 that analyst Max Weinbach found Apple Pencil support enabled on his iPhone Duo after installing the iOS 27.2 Release Candidate, and that iOS 27.2 was expected to be released to the public the following week.

Apple released iOS 27.2 publicly on October 26, 2026, and 9to5Mac reports that it brings Apple Pencil (USB-C) support to the iPhone Duo on both the inner and outer displays. The Duo ships with iOS 27.1, which does not include Pencil support, so update to iOS 27.2 or later before pairing a Pencil. Our iOS 27 guide covers the rest of the Duo's software.

Pairing, charging and storage

Pairing. Apple Pencil Pro pairs with iPads magnetically, but MacRumors notes that the iPhone Duo has to be paired with the USB-C Apple Pencil using a USB-C cable. Apple's product page says the Pencil "pairs and charges via a USB-C Charge Cable."

Charging. Charging uses the same USB-C cable, per Apple's product page.

Storage, the hinge trick. On iPad, Apple says the Pencil attaches magnetically to the side for storage. On the Duo, MacRumors found that it attaches magnetically to the hinge for storage, but it does not charge there.

What can Apple Pencil do on the iPhone Duo?

Once it is paired, MacRumors says the Pencil works with the Duo much as it works with an iPad. You can write and draw on both the inner and outer displays, and there is a setting to turn on palm rejection. MacRumors' October 21 report adds that you can draw, annotate and scroll within supported apps.

The limits

  • No pressure sensitivity, double-tap or squeeze. MacRumors points out that, compared with Apple Pencil Pro, the USB-C model lacks all three.
  • No hover. Apple's footnote says hover is not supported with the Duo.
  • A smaller canvas than an iPad. MacRumors' assessment is that the Pencil is not quite as useful on the Duo as on an iPad because of the limited screen size. Our iPhone Duo vs iPad mini comparison looks at that size trade-off.
  • iOS 27.2 or later required. None of it works on the iOS 27.1 software the Duo ships with, so the Duo needs iOS 27.2 or later installed.

Display care: lines on the screen

MacRumors found that the Pencil tip can leave lines on the Duo's display, but that they wipe away with a polishing cloth. It says permanent damage is unlikely. If the display does get damaged, MacRumors reports that Apple offers an iPhone Duo cover layer replacement for $19 with AppleCare+ and $49 without. Our monthly cost and carriers guide covers what AppleCare+ for the Duo costs.

Should you buy an Apple Pencil for the iPhone Duo?

MacRumors' view is that if you want to take notes or make quick sketches on the Duo, Apple Pencil (USB-C) could be worth the $79. MacRumors also reported it at $69 at Amazon on October 23, 2026; treat that as a price reported on that date, not a standing price.

The math changes if you already own an Apple Pencil Pro for an iPad. It will not work with the Duo, so you would be buying a second Pencil for a smaller screen, without the Pro's pressure sensitivity, double-tap or squeeze. If you plan to carry the Duo instead of a tablet, our travel guide looks at that trade-off. And since iOS 27.2 is now out, a Pencil bought now works once the Duo is updated.
