iPhone Duo pre-orders opened Friday, October 16 at 8 a.m. ET, and launch-day delivery was gone within minutes. By 8:30 a.m. ET, according to MacRumors, every configuration on Apple's US online store showed delivery on January 25, 2027. In between, Apple confirmed prices for all four storage tiers, called demand "nothing short of extraordinary," and left the biggest launch-week question unanswered: whether stores will have any phones for walk-in buyers on Friday, October 23. Here is the week in one place, with links to the full stories.
Key takeaways
- Apple says pre-orders opened Friday, October 16 at 8 a.m. ET, with first deliveries and in-store availability on Friday, October 23.
- As reported by MacRumors, launch-day delivery vanished within minutes, and by 8:30 a.m. ET every configuration showed January 25, 2027.
- Apple's store now lists every tier: $1,999 (256GB), $2,199 (512GB), $2,599 (1TB), and $3,199 (2TB).
- Apple says demand has been "nothing short of extraordinary." Reporting points to limited supply as well, and the split between the two is unknown.
- Walk-in availability on launch day is unclear: a MacRumors report says staff are warning shoppers, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman disputes that Apple gave that guidance.
How Friday morning unfolded
Pre-orders opened at 8 a.m. ET (5 a.m. PT). According to MacRumors, delivery estimates moved off launch day within minutes, and by 8:30 a.m. ET reached January 25, 2027 for every configuration on Apple's US online store. 9to5Mac reported that some buyers saw January 29. MacRumors noted that customers who ordered right at the start are still due their phones on October 23.
Store pickup was briefly offered during pre-orders, MacRumors reported, then disabled, with Apple's store telling customers interested in pickup to check back on Saturday, October 24.
The only movement reported since then is small: iClarified reported Apple's ordering page listing January 22 for the 256GB star white model, three days earlier than Friday's January 25. Our pre-orders open report has the full minute-by-minute timeline from Friday morning.
Prices are confirmed now
Before pre-orders, Apple had announced only the $1,999 starting price. Since October 16, Apple's own store lists every tier:
| Storage | Price (US) |
|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,999 |
| 512GB | $2,199 |
| 1TB | $2,599 |
| 2TB | $3,199 |
There are two colors, star white and night sky, at every capacity.
Financing. Apple lists the 256GB model at $83.29 a month for 24 months. Through Apple Upgrade, Apple's lease program, the Duo starts at $57.99 a month on a 24-month term; it is a lease, so the phone is not yours at the end. For trade-ins, Apple's store gives a personalized estimate based on your device; press reporting has put the range at $175 to $885 for an iPhone 13 or later.
The supply story behind the slip
Apple's own explanation is demand. In a statement reported by the Financial Times on Friday, Apple said: "The pre-order demand for iPhone Duo, our first foldable iPhone, has been nothing short of extraordinary. We are working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers' hands as quickly as possible, and we will continue accepting orders online."
Reporting suggests supply is the other half of the story:
- Bloomberg (Mark Gurman, Power On) reported that around August, Apple believed production problems could push the launch to later in November. Apple built enough inventory to keep the October 23 date, but supply was still expected to be limited. Gurman also reported that the original plan was to launch in the US and China first, before Apple chose a day-one launch in more than 70 countries.
- Analyst estimates for 2026 vary widely. Jeff Pu cut his 2026 forecast to 6 million units, citing hinge constraints. Ming-Chi Kuo put assembly shipments at roughly 7 to 8 million in the second half of 2026. Securities Times, as reported by 9to5Mac, said Apple raised component orders by about 30 percent, lifting its 2026 target toward 10 million units.
Those figures measure slightly different things and do not agree, and Apple has not published any of its own. The honest reading of the January delivery dates is that they reflect both strong demand and limited supply. Nobody outside Apple knows how much of the slip is one or the other.

AppleCare+. Apple's listed fee for an inner display repair without AppleCare+ is $999, as reported by MacRumors. Our AppleCare+ guide does the break-even math.
What happens next
- Friday, October 23: launch day. First pre-orders arrive, and the Duo goes on sale in stores, according to Apple. Whether stores will have walk-in stock is unclear. MacRumors reported that some Apple Store staff were told to warn shoppers that walk-in purchases on launch day will likely be impossible. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman disputed that, saying Apple had sent no such guidance to its stores, though individual store managers might have told employees. Apple has not said either way.
- Saturday, October 24: pickup check-back. Apple's store tells customers interested in in-store pickup to check back that day, MacRumors reported.
- Friday, October 30: 28 more countries. Apple says the Duo becomes available in 28 more countries and regions, after more than 70 at launch.
Frequently asked questions
If I order an iPhone Duo now, when will it arrive?
Probably late January 2027. MacRumors reported that by 8:30 a.m. ET on Friday, every configuration on Apple's US online store showed January 25, and 9to5Mac reported some buyers seeing January 29. iClarified later reported January 22 for the 256GB star white model. Estimates can change as stock frees up.
How much does the iPhone Duo cost?
Apple's store lists the iPhone Duo at $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for 2TB, in star white or night sky. Apple also lists $83.29 a month for 24 months on the 256GB model.
Will Apple Stores have iPhone Duo stock for walk-in buyers on October 23?
Apple has not said. MacRumors reported that some store staff were told to warn shoppers that walk-in purchases will likely be impossible, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman disputed that Apple sent any such guidance. Apple's store tells customers interested in pickup to check back on Saturday, October 24.
Why is the iPhone Duo backordered into January?
A mix of demand and limited supply, and nobody outside Apple knows the split. Apple called pre-order demand nothing short of extraordinary, while Bloomberg reported that supply was expected to stay limited after production problems earlier this year.
