In his iPhone Duo unboxing on launch day, Aaron Zollo of Zollotech showed what is in the box of a retail unit, set it up from his iPhone 18 Pro Max on camera, and spent his first session walking through the hardware, software, and cameras of a phone priced from $1,999 to $3,199. His verdict in brief: he expected to be "a little bit disappointed," but with apps already updated to fill the display, he found it "actually quite good" and "better than I expected at this point." He is clear this is a first look, not his full review, which will come after more time with the phone. iPhone Duo Hub has not tested the phone; every finding below is Zollotech's.

Key takeaways
- The box holds the phone, an eSIM-only note, and a braided USB-C to USB-C cable; there is no charger.
- Setup offered a day-one software update, from iOS 27.1 build 24A94232 to build 24A94425.
- After restoring and updating, the phone ran quite warm, about 44 degrees Celsius on his thermal camera.
- Zollo likes the nano-texture inner display and found no obvious flicker in a quick slow-motion check, with a PWM smoothing setting available.
- The cameras lack several iPhone 18 Pro features, and he found the inner FaceTime camera only fine for calls.
What comes in the iPhone Duo box?
Zollo opens with the price and options: $1,999 to $3,199, in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB, and in star white and night sky. He unboxes a star white 512GB model. Inside, he finds:
- The iPhone Duo, with labels showing where the volume keys and other controls are.
- A note that you no longer need a physical SIM card, because the Duo is eSIM only.
- A braided USB-C to USB-C cable.
That is everything. "I do wish they would have included a charger," he says. Later in the video he looks at both colors through the iPhone Duo wallpapers, which come in a star white and a night sky version.
The setup experience
Restore. Zollo set up the Duo with Quick Start from his iPhone 18 Pro Max, choosing a display appearance option along the way, then transferred his data from iCloud. Opening the phone mid-setup showed setup continuing on the inner display in a smaller window, and closing it carried on on the outer display. After the backup finished, the restore completed, and he notes the home screen matched his iPhone 18 Pro Max's layout, with the dock moved to the side with smaller icons.
The software update. Setup offered "a software update with important bug fixes," which he chose to install later. Checking afterward, he found the Duo shipped with iOS 27.1 build 24A94232, with a 1.04 GB update available. After updating, it showed iOS 27.1 build 24A94425. What the update changed, he says, "we don't really know." Our setup guide covers the same day-one update and how to plan for it.
Touch ID setup. Touch ID sits in the side button. Setup asks you to place and lift your finger repeatedly, with haptic feedback each time, then place the rest of your thumb on the sensor; you can add more fingers now or later in Settings.
First impressions
Design and weight
Zollo points out the titanium frame, Touch ID in the power button, Camera Control, speakers on the bottom and top, the USB-C port, and the volume buttons on the top edge. The weight is "definitely something you can feel," he says. Apple lists the Duo at 254 grams; he compares that with 249 grams for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
He also recommends a settings change for the top volume buttons: turning off fixed position volume controls in Sound and Haptics, so the buttons follow the phone's orientation instead of working backwards when it is turned around.
Displays and PWM
Zollo loves the feel of the nano-texture inner display, which he says has no glare, while the glossy outer display shows reflections when it is off. He describes 120Hz ProMotion up to 3,000 nits. On PWM, he found a Display Pulse Smoothing setting in Accessibility, which disables pulse width modulation at low brightness, and in a quick 240fps slow-motion check saw "not a whole lot noticeable right now." He says longer use is needed to know whether it affects him. Our display explainer covers what Apple confirms about both screens.
Does the iPhone Duo get hot?
Restoring from iCloud and installing the update left the phone "quite warm," Zollo found. His thermal camera showed about 44 degrees Celsius over the processor area. He suggests the titanium and glass body does not shed heat as easily as the iPhone 18 Pro Max, while noting it has a vapor chamber. He expects it to perform well, but says he will test that properly later.
Is Touch ID on the iPhone Duo slow?
Zollo found Touch ID slow with the "rest finger to open" setting on: press once, then rest your finger, and it unlocks after a wait. With the setting off, he found tapping the display, swiping up, and then touching the sensor unlocked it immediately. He hopes Apple makes it faster in a future update.
Cameras
Front: a 12MP camera that records 4K at 60fps, which he notes is not the 18MP front camera of the iPhone 18 Pro models. Rear: two 48MP cameras, wide and ultra wide, with no telephoto lens, offering 1x, 2x, and up to 10x digital zoom. He also showed recording yourself with the rear cameras by swiping to show the camera on the outer display, which he expects to look much better than the front cameras.
The inner FaceTime camera, he says, is only 4 megapixels and records in HD at 60fps: "not very good, but it's fine for a FaceTime call." Apple does not give a megapixel figure and lists it as an under-display FaceTime camera with 1080p video. He tried Smart Take, which captures photos automatically when everyone is ready, Duo Preview, and Kid Cue with its Snoopy animation, though he found the camera's orientation behavior odd at first.
Camera features the Duo lacks. Compared with the iPhone 18 Pro models, Zollo lists no ProRAW, no spatial photos, no variable aperture, no pro controls, no ProRes video, and no studio-quality four-mic array. What it does have, he notes, is IP68 dust and water resistance. Our iPhone Duo camera guide covers Apple's camera specs.
Speakers
Zollo measured about 80 dB at the very highest volume and the mid-70s in regular use. With the phone open, he says the sound is "very full" and stayed clear even at the highest volume, though he is not sure the speakers beat the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Multitasking, tent mode, and apps
Multitasking took him a little getting used to, with Safari on the right-hand side. He found it works differently from an iPad, with no dock appearing, and that some apps could be resized while others could not; tapping the center locks two apps together. Tent mode worked with apps including the Clock, with alarms, and the TV app.
On apps, he found a new App Store category for iPhone Duo apps and games, and many apps already updated, including Mercury Weather, Maps, UniFi, Instagram, and Tesla. Others are not ready yet: the myQ app did not fit properly, offering an expand option like early iPad apps. On the outer display, he found the wider keyboard "a little bit easier to type on" than on the iPhone 18 Pro models, and on the inner display you can split the keyboard.
How is the iPhone Duo battery life so far?
Zollo is clear battery life needs more time. After restoring, updating, and installing everything, the phone was already at 50 percent with 39 minutes of screen time, and he says he will see what it is like over the next few days of mixed use. Battery health showed 100 percent.
Apple's cases
He tried Apple's iPhone Duo Case, whose front piece prompts a "shift left edge" display setting that, he found, costs a little screen space. He also tried the Folio with its many magnets and stand, saying it looks good, though he is unsure how much it protects the phone.
What one setup session can and cannot tell you
A first session like this is good at showing what is in the box, how setup and the day-one update work, which settings matter, and which apps are ready. It cannot settle battery life, long-term heat behavior, PWM comfort over weeks, or how the hinge and display hold up. Zollo says as much: battery "we'll have to see," heat he will test, PWM needs longer use, and his full review comes later. Treat his "better than expected" as a first impression, not a final verdict.
