iPhone Duo FaceTime and video calls: two front cameras, one big screen

iPhone Duo video calls explained: the 12MP Center Stage camera when closed, the under-display FaceTime camera when open, and how Duo FaceTime uses both screens.

Which camera does an iPhone Duo video call use? It depends on whether the phone is open or closed. Closed, you are on the 12MP Center Stage camera on the 5.4-inch outer display. Open, you are on a separate FaceTime camera hidden under the 7.6-inch inner display. And there is a third option most people will miss: with Duo FaceTime, people sitting with you can join the call on the outer display instead of squeezing into one screen. Here is how each works, based on what Apple has confirmed.

Key takeaways

  • The Duo has two front cameras: a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer display, and an under-display FaceTime camera in the inner display that records 1080p video.
  • The under-display camera stays hidden until you need it, so the 7.6-inch screen is uninterrupted.
  • Duo FaceTime, a Duo-exclusive feature, lets people with you join the call on the outer display, according to Apple.
  • Apple says the under-display camera works with the phone held open or propped on a surface for hands-free calls.
  • No independent call-quality testing has been published yet.

The two front cameras

Both specs are from Apple's iPhone Duo product page. For the full camera lineup, including the rear cameras, see our iPhone Duo camera guide.

Calls on the closed phone

Folded shut, the Duo works like a regular iPhone with a 5.4-inch display, and the 12MP Center Stage camera on that display handles the call. Apple lists Center Stage for photos and video calls on this camera. For framing, Apple says Center Stage lets you go from portrait to landscape without moving your iPhone, and fits more people in the frame automatically.

This is the quick-call mode: answer, talk, hang up, without unfolding anything.

Calls on the big screen

Unfold the Duo and the call moves to the 7.6-inch inner display, with its own camera. Apple describes it as an under-display FaceTime camera that records 1080p video and is hidden until you need it. Because the camera sits under the screen rather than in a cutout, the viewing surface stays uninterrupted. Our iPhone Duo display explainer covers both screens in more detail.

Apple says this camera helps you connect with friends and family whether the Duo is held open or propped on a surface for hands-free calls. The bigger screen means a bigger view of the people you are talking to.

Duo FaceTime: the outer display joins in

This is the part that only a foldable with two full screens can do. Apple names Duo FaceTime as one of the Duo-exclusive features, alongside Smart Take, Duo Preview, and Kid Cue. In Apple's words, Duo FaceTime lets people who are with you join a video call on the outer display, so everyone can share the moment without crowding around one screen. Apple's product page puts it more simply: no more crowding around or passing the phone.

Apple has not published a step-by-step description of how Duo FaceTime is set up, so we will cover the details once the phone is in hand.

Hands-free and multitasking calls

Kickstand. For long calls, holding a phone open gets tiring. Apple's iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand ($129) has an integrated kickstand that Apple says supports a wide range of angles for reading, viewing content, or FaceTime, and folds away when not in use. If you only want protection, the iPhone Duo Case is $79. Our iPhone Duo cases and accessories guide compares the two.

Split View. Under iOS 27, Split View runs two apps side by side on the inner display, and the Duo ships with iOS 27.1. That opens up the idea of keeping notes or a document beside a call. Apple's own Split View examples are Photos next to Mail and two Safari windows; it has not specifically shown a FaceTime call in Split View, so treat call multitasking as something to confirm once the Duo ships. Our iPhone Duo for work guide covers Split View for everyday work.

The honest limits

  • The inner camera is 1080p, not 12MP. Apple lists the under-display FaceTime camera at 1080p video, while the outer display has the 12MP Center Stage camera. They are different cameras with different specs.
  • No call-quality results yet. Apple has not published hands-on call-quality testing, and independent camera and call tests have not been published. Any claim about how good Duo calls look or sound is premature until reviewers can test it.
  • First-generation features. Duo FaceTime is new. How it behaves in practice is something to judge once people are using it.

Who notices the difference most

People who make long video calls get the most from the Duo: the 7.6-inch screen and a hands-free kickstand are the biggest changes. People who call with family or friends in the room have the most to gain from Duo FaceTime. If your calls are quick and one-on-one, the closed phone and its Center Stage camera work much like the iPhone you have now.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, with the store range running to $3,199 for 2TB. Pre-orders opened on October 16, and the Duo goes on sale Friday, October 23.

Frequently asked questions

Which camera does the iPhone Duo use for FaceTime?

It depends on how you hold it. Closed, the 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer display handles the call. Open, the under-display FaceTime camera in the 7.6-inch inner display records 1080p video and stays hidden until you need it.

What is Duo FaceTime?

Duo FaceTime is one of Apple's Duo-exclusive features. Apple says it lets people who are with you join a video call on the outer display, so everyone can share the moment without crowding around one screen.

Can I make hands-free video calls on the iPhone Duo?

Yes. Apple says the under-display FaceTime camera works whether the Duo is held open or propped on a surface for hands-free calls. Apple's iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand ($129) props the open phone at a wide range of angles.

Is the iPhone Duo good for video calls?

On paper it has more ways to call than a standard iPhone: two front cameras and a 7.6-inch screen. Apple has not published call-quality testing and independent reviews have not been published yet, so real-world call quality is still unmeasured.
